Suspect in homicide dies following gunfight with police in José C. Paz

A man sought for the murder of a prison officer died on Wednesday afternoon in José C. Paz after exchanging gunfire with police officers and taking his own life when surrounded, according to diarioefecto.com.ar citing the official police report.

The incident occurred at the intersection of Pichincha and Route 197, metres from the Mercado Concentrador. Officers patrolling the area recognised the suspect, whom they linked to the murder of a prison officer that occurred on 14 February this year at Route 197 and Gaspar Campos.

When attempting to identify him, the man opened fire and wounded an officer in the leg. The police officer returned fire and managed to wound the suspect, who escaped by jumping between houses in the neighbourhood. Several police vehicles were immediately deployed to surround the area.

The suspect entered a house in the sector and, finding himself surrounded with no possibility of escape, shot himself in the head.

The wounded officer was transported to Hospital Mercante, where he underwent surgery. According to the police report, he is out of danger.
