Cannabis plantation in Neusiedl am See: Three pensioners in court in Eisenstadt
Three pensioners are standing trial at the Eisenstadt Regional Court over an alleged cannabis plantation with around 900 plants. Approximately 63 kilograms are said to have been sold in Vienna.
Pensioners charged with 70-kilogramme cannabis harvest in Eisenstadt
Three pensioners from Burgenland have had to answer to the court in Eisenstadt since Tuesday. According to kurier.at, the men are alleged to have cultivated around 70 kilograms of cannabis herb in Neusiedl am See in 2025.
The indoor facility with approximately 900 plants was located, according to the charge, at the residential address of the 61-year-old first accused. Around 63 kilograms of the harvest were allegedly resold primarily in Vienna.
The prosecution became aware of the plantation through "considerable activity" around the house, deliveries of seedlings and fertiliser, and noticeably high electricity consumption. The accused are also said to have set up an electricity bypass in order to draw more power than was actually billed. During a house search, the facility was eventually discovered.
The first accused admitted to part of the charges: he stated that he had consumed a small portion of the harvest himself and sold small quantities; the majority he had passed on to the two co-accused. The second accused explained that he had merely worked as a "gardener" and knew nothing of the plantation or sales. The third accused also denied any knowledge – he had exclusively supplied seedlings and cuttings.
A verdict could be handed down on Tuesday afternoon.
