A purported robbery in Vienna-Donaustadt turned out to be a brazen false report. According to the Kronen Zeitung, a 33-year-old Viennese man reported to police in mid-May that he had been threatened and robbed by an unknown person.
According to his original account, the man was allegedly pressured by an unknown person at a cigarette vending machine. The alleged perpetrator supposedly forced him to hand over his wallet containing a substantial sum of cash and subsequently fled on an e-scooter.
The investigation by the Vienna State Criminal Police Office, North branch, quickly brought a different truth to light. The described robbery was entirely fabricated – the 33-year-old had simply lost his wallet and filed the report as a way to recover the missing money.
During police questioning, the man eventually confessed. He was reported to the authorities for falsely reporting a criminal offence.
