Lugner admits to Nazi chats – investigation likely concluded
The FPÖ politician Leo Lugner has acknowledged making "thoughtless remarks" that "should never have been made". He stated this on Tuesday in a post on X. Der Standard had previously revealed that an investigation into Lugner on suspicion of Nazi-related offences has been ongoing for four years.
According to Der Standard, the incriminating chat contents were likely "bycatch" from other investigations – material discovered by chance that was not originally the subject of the examination. The specific contents of the chats will in all likelihood remain confidential.
On X, Lugner emphasised that he strongly condemned the ideology and crimes of the Nazi regime. He had remained silent in response to an earlier inquiry from Der Standard. For the FPÖ politician, the case apparently ends with a diversion – an out-of-court settlement method that avoids conviction.
