Armed robberies of bakery and post office in Götzis: five-year prison sentence

On Wednesday, the Feldkirch Regional Court heard the case of two men who robbed a bakery and a post office in Götzis. As krone.at reports, the defendants failed with their explanations in court.
The 26-year-old main defendant claimed he committed the robberies to finance a therapy place for his ill brother. This account quickly lost credibility in the course of the trial. The repeatedly convicted Vorarlberg resident had a monthly income of around 4800 euros but apparently lived beyond his means. Originally, he had planned a robbery of a drug dealer.
The second defendant, who was unemployed at the time, provided a blank-firing pistol and a balaclava and took on the role of driver. At Garnmarkt in Götzis, the 26-year-old decided at short notice to rob the Mangold branch there instead. The haul was 1260 euros. Two weeks later came the robbery of the post office in Götzis — this time without his accomplice, who no longer wanted to participate. Wearing an FFP2 mask and armed, the main perpetrator travelled by public transport and emptied the till. Haul: 6215 euros.
The joy over the stolen money was short-lived. During a subsequent house search, investigators secured around 5500 euros. In court, two bakery employees and two postal workers described the consequences of the acts — ranging from fear for their lives to persistent sleep disorders.
Both defendants apologised, but the court was only partly impressed by this. The main defendant was sentenced to five years in prison; in addition, 16 months from earlier convictions were revoked. His accomplice, who had no previous convictions, received a partially suspended prison sentence of 30 months. Both sentences are final.
