Trial in Nickelsdorf: Mother accused of killing newborn

As vol.at reports, five defendants have had to answer for themselves in court this week after a killed newborn was found at the Nickelsdorf border crossing. The dead girl was discovered on 18 January 2026 by travellers in a carrying bag. An autopsy showed that the child had been born alive and had died through external force – a skull-brain trauma was determined as the cause of death.

The first defendant, who was a minor at the time of the alleged crime, is said to have killed the newborn by strangulation and blunt force trauma to the head, according to the indictment. If convicted, she faces up to two and a half years in prison. Her relatives are said to have assisted her during the act, shielded her from discovery, and eliminated traces of the crime. They face ten to twenty years in prison – with the exception of the young fourth defendant, who also faces life imprisonment.

The five accused, who remain in custody, are said to have been travelling together in a minibus. The 17-year-old is said to have briefly stepped out to leave the dead child behind. The trial is scheduled for two days; a verdict could be reached on Thursday.
