Vienna speeder flees at 230 km/h on A8 – arrested in construction zone

Chase ends in construction zone near Aistersheim

A 23-year-old man from Vienna fled police in Upper Austria at speeds of up to 230 km/h, repeatedly risking head-on collisions with oncoming traffic. According to krone.at, the man was subsequently arrested and brought to Wels remand prison.

The incident began with a laser speed measurement in the municipality of Kallham: officers from the provincial traffic department registered the vehicle travelling at 125 km/h in a 70 km/h zone. They then pursued the vehicle with blue lights and sirens activated.

The driver refused to stop and attempted several times to force the unmarked police vehicle off the road. Speeds of up to 200 km/h were measured on the B137 and B141, with repeated near head-on collisions with oncoming vehicles.

Passenger throws objects at pursuers

The 17-year-old passenger, also from Vienna, threw several unidentified objects and a glass bottle from the vehicle in the direction of the pursuing unmarked police car during the chase. The flight subsequently continued on the A8, where the driver reached a speed of 230 km/h. At the height of Aistersheim, he drove into the cordoned-off area of a construction site and collided with a solid construction element.

After the impact, the 23-year-old initially attempted to start a construction vehicle on foot – the vehicle's driver prevented this. The fleeing man then crossed the motorway again and was arrested by police officers.

No driving licence, arrest warrant and drugs

During the check, it was established that the man did not possess a valid driving licence. There was also an outstanding arrest warrant from the Vienna public prosecutor's office against him. Officers found a small quantity of drugs in the vehicle. The vehicle was provisionally seized due to the serious speeding violations.

On the orders of the Wels public prosecutor's office, the 23-year-old was brought to Wels remand prison. The underage passenger is being reported for prosecution while remaining at liberty.
