Two Aruban police officers have been sentenced to three years in prison for shooting dead 19-year-old Ayden Lanoy in January 2025. The family will receive nearly €20,000 in compensation.

Two police officers on Aruba have been sentenced to three years in prison, of which one year is suspended with a probation period of one year, for shooting dead 19-year-old Ayden Lanoy. This was reported by rtl.nl.
Lanoy ignored a police stop sign in January 2025 and drove through, which resulted in a pursuit. When the car could no longer continue, the officers fired twenty shots. The court found it proven that both officers were guilty of killing the young man by shooting him multiple times.
The officers claimed they were in a dangerous situation in which they believed they had to shoot. The court rejected this defence. The Public Prosecution Service had previously demanded twelve months in prison and 180 hours of community service — the court imposed a considerably heavier sentence than that.
In addition to the prison sentence, the convicted officers must pay nearly 40,000 Aruban florins, equivalent to approximately €20,000, to the family of Lanoy. Court costs of approximately €3,000 are also their responsibility.
The death of the student caused considerable unrest in the Aruban community. Several demonstrations were held on the island. Arubans also gathered in Rotterdam to protest police violence.
According to local media, the victim's parents reacted emotionally in the courtroom when the verdict was announced. They believe the sentence imposed is far too lenient.
