Five people were injured in a violent road accident that ended a police chase during the night of Thursday to Friday in Jumet in the northern district of Charleroi.

At around two o'clock in the morning, between Thursday and Friday, a French car broke through a police checkpoint set up by officers from the Charleroi police zone. The driver, a 17-year-old minor living in the surrounding area, accelerated as soon as he spotted the uniforms. Four people were in the vehicle.
The officers immediately raised the alarm and set off in pursuit of the fleeing driver. The chase ended in a violent collision at the intersection of Rue Saint-Ghislain and Rue Borfilet. The saloon car struck head-on a van coming in the opposite direction, causing it to flip onto its roof. The vehicle of the offenders was then stopped by the wall of a house, sending the front door crashing into the living room.
The toll is heavy: five victims in total, split between the two automobiles. The passenger sitting in the rear of the saloon car and the occupant of the van were particularly badly affected. The firefighters from the Hainaut-Est zone, commanded by Lieutenant Martin, had to extract them using cutting equipment. The rescue workers and two emergency medical teams took over to evacuate the injured to different hospitals in the surrounding area.
The young driver, who escaped without a scratch, was remanded in custody. He is to be brought before an examining magistrate at the Charleroi prosecutor's office. The case is being investigated for "malicious obstruction of traffic", an offence that involves deliberate endangerment of the lives of others. The court could impose a financial penalty, a prison sentence and a suspension of the right to drive, possibly permanent.
