A routine traffic police check in Geraardsbergen and Lierde turned violent on Saturday on Schendelbekeplein. What began as an ordinary vehicle stop developed into a physical altercation in which two officers sustained injuries.

Both police officers had to be taken to hospital. They showed signs of bites. One officer also suffered back pain following the incident. This was reported by Karolien De Turck, press officer at the police zone, to NUUS.

The vehicle belonging to the other party was towed away after the incident. Two persons were arrested. The charges against them: resistance to police and intentional infliction of harm on uniformed officers.

The police provided no explanation of what triggered the escalation of the situation. It has also not been disclosed whether those arrested have been brought before an investigating judge.
