Assizes trial in Arlon: home nurse (53) tried for death of 92-year-old patient
Since Monday 15 June 2026, Vinciane Welvaert has been standing trial before the assizes jury in Luxembourg's Arlon. The 53-year-old home nurse must answer for the death of Marie Reding, an elderly woman of 92 who died in Martelange on 1 March 2023.
Chairman Philippe Gorlé opened the hearing after the reading of the indictment by Crown Advocate Alice Lecomte. The questioning of the accused began Monday morning. Initially Welvaert claimed that she had found the injured woman in the bathroom, after which she had herself called the emergency services.
Yet she admitted multiple times that this account did not correspond with reality. Ultimately she chose a different defence strategy: she would suddenly have come across an unknown man who had attacked the victim himself.
Her past also came into question. The woman had spent years in a psychiatric hospital for harassment she had committed in Hollange, the village where she lived. "Some things I regret, but many others I did not do," she said herself. "It was a difficult period in my life."
The hearing continued Monday afternoon with testimony from the investigating judge and police officers who had handled the case.
