On Wednesday, the court of assizes of Belgian Luxembourg opened proceedings against Vinciane Welvaert, a 53-year-old healthcare professional. She must answer for the death of Marie Reding, a 92-year-old woman, which occurred on 1 March 2023 at her home in Martelange.
The defendant presented herself voluntarily to the court. Since July 2025, she has been released under electronic surveillance. She therefore sits in the dock without being incarcerated.
To form the popular jury, around a hundred inhabitants were summoned. Twelve of them were selected by lot: six women and six men. Two men and one woman were chosen as replacement jurors.
Hearings will begin on Monday 15 June at 9 a.m. They will start with the reading of the indictment, followed by questioning of the suspect. Vinciane Welvaert denies any involvement in the death. The proceedings are expected to last five days.
