Arlon Assizes: 53-year-old care worker faces jury for death of 92-year-old woman in Martelange
Monday marks the beginning of a major criminal case at the Arlon Palace of Justice. Vinciane Welvaert, 53, must answer before twelve citizen judges for the death of Marie Reding, a Martelange resident aged 92 at the time of the events.
The case dates back to early March 2023. The victim, who had lived a solitary existence since her husband's death some fifteen years earlier, was found lifeless in the sanitary facilities of her home, presenting head injuries. Investigators quickly directed their investigation towards the accused.
Only three days after the body's discovery, Welvaert was charged with homicide and placed in provisional detention. She has consistently contested her guilt. In summer 2025, the judiciary had granted her release under electronic surveillance, pending trial.
The conduct of the hearing falls to Philippe Gorlée. Alice Lecomte will serve as representative of the public prosecutor's office, whilst the defendant will be able to rely on the submissions of Xavier Koener and Dimitri Soblet. Last week, the random draw designated six women and six men to sit in the jury box, complemented by three alternates.
The opening of proceedings will be marked by the presentation of charges and hearing of the accused. The entire procedure should extend over one working week.
