A jury seated in Arlon found Vinciane W. guilty of causing the death of Marie Reding. The verdict came after four hours of deliberation. The defendant, who worked as a home healthcare nurse, was held responsible for the death that occurred on 1 March 2023 in the town of Martelange. The victim was a 92-year-old woman.
The public prosecutor's representative, Alice Lecomte, sought a sentence of thirty years' imprisonment. She identified no mitigating factors in the defendant's favour. The prosecution deplored the lack of remorse and empathy shown towards the murdered person. According to the prosecution, this case does not result from a simple lapse: rather, it should be seen as two decades of aggressive behaviour and intimidation that led to the death of the elderly woman. The magistrate emphasised the danger the convicted woman poses to society, particularly since she had benefited from criminal supervision for seven years without any structure to channel her impulses.
At the hearing, Me Xavier Koener, lawyer for the civil party, argued for a sentence capped at fifteen years. He highlighted the absence of any prior conviction before a criminal court. He also underlined his client's exemplary behaviour during her period of remand detention, as well as during her house arrest with electronic monitoring: no incidents were reported. According to the defence, the probability of reoffending is minimal and the defendant is capable of complying with the obligations imposed upon her.
When asked whether she wished to speak one last time before the magistrates and jury members, Vinciane W. chose to remain silent.
