A citizens' jury in Liège convicted on Thursday a 36-year-old man from Visé for the death of a 22-year-old young man and for attempting to kill a second individual during an altercation in a café in 2021.

A panel of citizens sitting at the Liège assize court ruled on Thursday afternoon on a case of fatal violence dating from 2021. A man in his thirties from Visé was found responsible for the death of Ismaël El Fakiri, a 22-year-old young man, during an altercation at the Café de l'Est in the city of Liège.
The facts occurred on 29 June 2021, shortly before 22:00. During a dispute that escalated, the accused used a blade repeatedly against his victim. The jurors concluded that the violence employed and the repetition of the actions demonstrated a clear intention to cause death. No mitigating circumstances of self-defence or provocation were accepted.
The same individual was also found guilty of attempting to take the life of Mohamed E., a 27-year-old resident of Liège, by striking him with the same weapon in an area of the body considered to be fatal. This question was the subject of a close vote within the jury, which ultimately ruled by majority.
Furthermore, the court found the accused guilty of unlawful possession of a weapon. Another participant in the brawl, Ibrahim I., was acquitted of accusations of violence against Mohamed E., the jury having accepted his claim of legitimate self-defence. As for Mohamed E., he was held responsible for blows struck against Ibrahim I., but was acquitted of violence committed against the principal accused, as he was defending himself at that moment.
