A 22-year-old man was tried in Ath for threatening two individuals with a steak knife. The incident occurred on 4 January in a shopping centre car park, located opposite the defendant's home.
Bryan, whose name has been changed, explained to the court president that he could no longer tolerate the car skids that regularly took place beneath his windows. According to his account, these stunts occurred at 20:00, 22:00, and sometimes until midnight. He and his partner, who had recently given birth, had already alerted the authorities without the situation improving. His wife felt threatened when certain participants noticed her behind the window. That evening, he lost his composure and went down to confront two young men he believed were responsible for these nocturnal disturbances.
One of the two complainants, Lucas, specified that he had just obtained his car and simply wished to engage in some drift manoeuvres. He acknowledged that the noise probably bothered the neighbours and accepted the defendant's apologies.
The public prosecutor recognised that Bryan's behaviour was entirely inappropriate but did not seek a severe sanction. The defence counsel described a context of recurring noise harassment that had prompted his client to move with his family. He argued for a suspended sentence or community service, contending that his client had acted out of fear for his loved ones.
