Belgium's Defence Minister, Theo Francken, announced on Friday the first joint operation between federal police and the Armed Forces in the Belgian capital, in response to escalating insecurity and shootings linked to drug trafficking. According to Correio da Manhã, the measure comes amid growing concern about violence in several areas of Brussels.
In a message posted on social media, Francken stated that the two forces would "work together against disorder, crimes and drug trafficking". The minister justified the involvement of the Armed Forces with the deterioration of security in certain areas of the city, emphasising that authorities need to "regain control" of the streets and stations.
