A 31-year-old man from Bruges must serve eighteen months in prison for a violent robbery in Koksijde. The incidents took place on 8 April. Together with a 40-year-old companion, he attacked a man and stole two mobile phones.
Around 23:00, the Westcoast police received a report of a brawl outside a café. Three people were involved. The victim was knocked down by a kick and received multiple blows on the street. Bystanders called the police. Based on their description, officers suspected the 31-year-old A.M. from Bruges. He had an extensive criminal record.
As the officers were on their way, they saw around 23:30 a bleeding man sitting on a bench in Zeelaan. It turned out to be the victim who had just been violently robbed of two smartphones. This description also pointed to A.M. The police knew he was staying nearby with his friend M.J. (40). When they rang the doorbell, initially no one answered. During a search that followed immediately, the two devices were found hidden on the terrace.
A.M. was sentenced in absentia to eighteen months' imprisonment for both offences. Through camera footage, it could be established that M.J. was not involved in the fight. His lawyer argued that he also knew nothing about the theft. The judge agreed and acquitted him.
