Google News RO — Crime (ro) reports that the prosecutor of the Belgian capital, Julien Moinil, has presented a series of alarming statistics regarding armed violence affecting Brussels. Since 2025, 170 attacks have been recorded, of which 69 took place during the current year. Two people have lost their lives as a result of these incidents, according to AFP.
"I am a concerned prosecutor, because anyone can be shot," Moinil said.
The latest wave of violence has encompassed three attacks in just three days. One of these directly targeted a police station in Brussels, where two masked individuals opened fire with automatic Kalashnikov-type weapons.
According to the prosecutor, most cases represent scores being settled between rival criminal gangs. The dynamics of reprisals between these networks cannot be stopped, in his view, without capturing their leaders.
Moinil pointed out that many of these leaders operate from abroad or coordinate their actions directly from prison cells. The prosecutor reiterated his request to authorities to equip penitentiaries with mobile telephone jamming systems.
Another issue raised concerns individuals illegally present on Belgian territory involved in such crimes. In 2025, Brussels police detained approximately 7,000 people without residence permits, and over 90% did not appear before a court.
"In a country that functions normally, a person without a residence permit who sells cocaine should be deported," emphasised prosecutor Moinil.
