A 45-year-old father of several children was brought before justice in Charleroi on Thursday for possession and trafficking in drugs.

The Charleroi court examined on Thursday morning the case of a 45-year-old man accused of selling cocaine. This father of a family, without professional occupation for three years, hoped in this way to resolve his money problems.
The case came to light on 13 May. Police officers, informed of suspicious activities, went to search the suspect's home. On the premises, an accomplice attempted to get rid of a drug pellet by throwing a look at the law enforcement officers. The search of the dwelling allowed seizure of 86 grammes of cocaine.
From the first interrogations, the man accepted responsibility for his actions. He explained that he had rolled up his sleeves in the illicit drug trade for several months. His income was, according to him, used to cover his household expenses. His precarious state of health — back pain preventing him from working — would have contributed to this downward spiral.
The representative of the public prosecutor recognised the defendant's frankness. She asked the court to sentence him to a period of one and a half years in custody, leaving the door open to a conditional sentence with probation.
The defendant's counsel pleaded for a sentence with a straightforward conditional discharge.
