The Arlon assizes court pronounced a sentence of 30 years' imprisonment on Friday against Vinciane Welvaert. The defendant, aged around fifty and working as a home nurse, was found guilty of wilful homicide against Marie Reding.

The victim, a nonagenarian, died in her home in Martelange on 1 March 2023. The accused, who was responsible for providing care to the elderly woman, consistently denied her guilt. However, her denials failed to convince the jury.

The deliberation was particularly swift. In less than two hours, the jury and the magistrates reached a verdict on the sentence. No mitigating circumstances were accepted in favour of the convicted woman. The judges notably emphasised the brutality of the crime scene and the ferocity shown by a healthcare professional towards a vulnerable and dependent person.

The sentence imposed is one of the heaviest possible under the Belgian judicial system. The convicted woman has fifteen days in which to lodge a cassation appeal against this decision.
