The incident occurred a few hours after a police station in Anderlecht, a neighbouring municipality in the Brussels metropolitan area, was sprayed with automatic weapon fire. This attack on the police station, carried out during the night of Friday to Saturday, resulted in no casualties.
The following morning, Sunday, another shot was fired in the same Saint-Gilles area. A bullet was found in an apartment window; the occupant, still in bed at the time of the incident, was unharmed, local authorities confirmed.
Jean Spinette, mayor of Saint-Gilles municipality, said he was "furious" following these incidents, according to Belga news agency. Belgian Interior Minister Bernard Quintin for his part declared he was "deeply shocked" by the events, stating he would not allow himself to be intimidated. "We will never abandon our determination to fight organised crime and drug trafficking firmly, quite the opposite!", he assured.
Belgium ranks among Europe's main hubs for drug trafficking. For several years, armed violence between rival networks has intensified, notably in the struggle for control of dealing territories.
