According to Google News FR — Crime (fr), Belgian authorities announced on Wednesday the strengthening of police forces in Brussels following a surge in armed violence linked to drug trafficking. The capital, which also hosts the headquarters of the European Union, has been shaken in recent days by several incidents in which attackers opened fire with automatic weapons, injuring several people and even targeting a police station.
Following an emergency meeting bringing together local and national officials, the authorities announced the deployment of 40 additional police officers as well as the redeployment of personnel to the most affected neighbourhoods. Mobile cameras will also be installed to help law enforcement identify and locate those responsible for the disturbances.
"We are in a situation of national emergency," declared Belgian Interior Minister Bernard Quintin on X. "The fight against organised crime must be an absolute priority for all services and all levels of government."
Belgium is among Europe's major drug trafficking hubs. For several years, armed violence between rival networks has intensified, with criminal organisations competing for control of drug sales points.
