Fleeing driver in Mercedes hits school fence in Châtelineau with children present
A young driver fled from police on Friday in Charleroi before ending his journey against a school in Châtelineau. No children were injured.
Police chase in Charleroi: Mercedes ends up against Boubier school
A young man driving a sports Mercedes refused to stop during a police check on Friday at around 15:30 in Gilly, according to DHnet. A local police patrol in Charleroi had spotted the vehicle travelling at high speed near the crematorium before activating their siren to intercept it.
The driver ignored the signal and fled, triggering a chase through the streets of Charleroi. The sequence ended at the entrance to Châtelineau, rue de la Résistance, in a 30 km/h speed-restricted zone adjoining the Boubier/Sart Allet school. The reckless driver, travelling at high speed, was struck by a vehicle coming from rue des Cayats, which had priority from the right.
Under the impact, the Mercedes spun around in the grass in front of the school before crashing into the school's fence. Debris flew into the playground where several children were present at the time of the incident. None of them were injured.
The driver who was following the rules of the road was injured in the collision. After the crash, the fleeing driver attempted to escape on foot but was caught and subdued by officers, who took him to the police station. A report was transmitted to the magistrate.
DHnet notes that the incident occurs as the Falzone trial — named after the family being prosecuted for killing seven people in Strépy whilst driving at 174 km/h — is currently being held before the assizes. Friday's events show that this case has not deterred everyone from adopting dangerous driving behaviour.
