Violent brawl breaks out in Antwerp's Seefhoek
Shortly after 19:30, the Antwerp police zone received multiple calls about a serious violent incident in Gasstraat, in the Seefhoek neighbourhood. Witnesses reported that fighting was taking place with clubs and stabbing weapons.
Police launched a large-scale operation. According to a bystander, at least a dozen police vehicles appeared at the scene, with officers numbering around twenty. "Our response was equally significant given the reports received," explained spokesman Sven Lommaert. "In the meantime, the situation has been brought back under control."
What exactly triggered the conflict remains unclear. The investigation unit is conducting an enquiry into the exact circumstances and the identity of those involved. One possible explanation being investigated is that this was an escalation of road rage in which the persons involved called on each other's help.
One casualty was reported in the incident. This person suffered a head injury and was transported by ambulance to a hospital.
