The end of a seven-year relationship spiralled into a series of criminal acts. A man named Steve was brought before magistrates in Charleroi on Monday to answer for multiple offences committed against his former partner and her new boyfriend.
It all began on 3 November 2024 in Momignies. The defendant broke into his previous partner's house by forcing open a rear door. He was attempting to discover the identity of the man now sharing the victim's life.
A month after this break-in, Steve returned to the same property. This time, he violently assaulted the new partner, striking him several times in the face and on the head.
On 2 December 2024, four police officers from the Botha zone were dispatched to the location at the request of the ex-partner. The individual immediately mounted fierce resistance to the officers. He hurled insults and threats at them before finally being subdued after several minutes of struggle.
Before the judges, the defendant admitted to all the facts alleged against him. His solicitor acknowledged that the break-up had caused his client to feel a profound sense of abandonment. Steve also pleaded guilty to harassment and a revenge porn matter. A sexually explicit sequence had been sent to the victim's children, which the accused himself described as "hateful".
The public prosecutor requested a sentence of one and a half years' imprisonment. Furthermore, the prosecution did not object to granting probationary suspension, a measure advocated by the defence.
