VRT NWS reports that a break-in occurred at the De Passant community centre in Zoutleeuw during the night from Sunday to Monday. The incident took place between 2.00 am and 6.30 am. The cafeteria, sports hall and cultural venue sustained damage. No information is available at present regarding any stolen goods.
The police were notified and have launched an investigation into the perpetrators. The city authorities are appealing to any potential witnesses to come forward.
Mayor Guy Dumst (CD&V) has reacted with shock. "Considerable damage has been established, notably in the cafeteria, sports hall and cultural venue," he stated. He points out that the consequences extend beyond the building itself. "I find this particularly regrettable and frankly also outrageous. It hurts to see that there is so little respect for property and for the work of so many people."
Dumst describes the incident as a serious blow to the local community. "This affects not only a building, but also everyone who is committed to our city. I am genuinely upset to have to witness this again."
The city is asking anyone who noticed anything during the relevant period to come forward. "If anyone has seen or heard anything, we ask them to report it so that the information can be properly passed on," Dumst said.
