The correctional court in Liège has convicted a 23-year-old man to a three-year suspended sentence. The incident dates from 18 October 2022, when the young man attacked his music teacher at the Royal School of Fragnée.
According to the victim, the perpetrator was a talented music student, but struggled with discipline and school rules. He was frequently late and often clashed with teachers over authority.
The defendant sees it differently. He claims that the teacher systematically harassed him.
On the day of the incident, the student wanted to go to a studio but was not given permission. An argument ensued. When the teacher tried to close the door, the young man reacted aggressively. He admitted: "I got worked up and grabbed the teacher by the throat. I was 18 and struggled with injustice. I regret what I did."
Witnesses, including the teacher himself, stated that the young man shouted death threats, used profanities, grabbed the teacher by the throat and delivered a knee strike to the abdomen. Fellow students intervened to stop the violence.
The victim was unfit for work for approximately ten months. He testified: "He said we would sort this out outside. I felt helpless. Since then I cannot tolerate crowds. I get panic attacks and breathing problems."
A fellow schoolgirl declared that the perpetrator approached her repeatedly to influence her testimony. When she refused, he began spreading rumours about her and threw rubber erasers at her in class.
Advocate Marielle Gilis pleaded for leniency. The judges granted this request. The convicted man must cover the costs of a medical examination to determine the lasting injuries sustained by the victim.
