A 36-year-old resident of Vielsalm has been sentenced by the Liège Court of Appeal to two years' custody for drug trafficking, bringing his total criminal convictions to sixteen.

A 36-year-old defendant residing in Vielsalm received a sentence of two years' custodial imprisonment on Tuesday before the Liège Court of Appeal. The charges concerned cannabis trafficking in the Belgian Luxembourg region.
At first instance, the tribunal had handed down a sentence of 20 months. The defendant had then appealed, arguing that a community-based sanction would be more beneficial for this type of offence.
The public prosecutor responded by detailing the criminal history of the accused. Fifteen previous sentences were on his record, for offences ranging from physical violence to theft, including drug offences, threats, driving without a licence, weapons possession and attempted theft.
According to the prosecutor's representative, incarceration represents the only solution for persistent repeat offenders who continue to commit crimes. The judges of the Court of Appeal agreed with this analysis.
