In the early hours of Saturday morning around 1 a.m., police arrested a man in Liège. Aged 49 and with a previous record for violent offences, the man was taken into custody and brought before the local public prosecutor.
The man had been in a romantic relationship for approximately six weeks with a 42-year-old woman living in the same city. He had moved in with her quickly, but his behaviour reportedly deteriorated rapidly. According to several witnesses, he became aggressive and jealous.
On Friday evening, another dispute broke out. The victim is said to have refused to give him her mobile phone, a device she intended to use to call for help. The suspect allegedly struck her several times. When questioned by investigators, he acknowledged the altercation while denying that he had struck her.
The case was referred for investigation, with a request for an arrest warrant against the accused.
