A woman from Fléron has been sentenced to 120 hours of community service and €8,000 in fines for smuggling narcotics to her imprisoned partner at Arlon. The man, who escaped from a French penitentiary, was tried in absentia and received a 32-month prison sentence.

The Arlon correctional tribunal ruled on Wednesday in a case involving the infiltration of narcotics into the local prison facility. A resident of Fléron, in the province of Liège, was found responsible for attempting on two occasions to smuggle drugs to her imprisoned partner.
The first attempt dated back to 20 December 2024. The defendant, who was about to give birth, had gone to the penitentiary for a conjugal visit. Security officers, assisted by specially trained dogs, discovered illicit substances hidden in her abdomen. After the birth of their daughter, the mother returned to see the father, this time with the infant. Law enforcement officers again seized narcotic products, this time concealed in the child's changing materials.
Both spouses were charged with forming a criminal group, drug trafficking, and attempting to bring prohibited substances into a place of detention. The husband did not appear: he had escaped from a holding facility beyond Quiévrain, where he was serving an eight-year sentence for other offences. He remains missing to date.
Investigators also uncovered threatening messages sent by the fugitive to his wife. In these texts, he demanded that she end her pregnancy immediately, otherwise he would "make her suffer, reduce her to ashes and take her life." These intimidations were treated as death threats against her.
Magistrate Céline Peiffer, who presided over the hearing, handed down separate sentences for each. For the mother, the tribunal opted for a penalty of 120 hours of community service coupled with a financial penalty of €8,000, taking into account her parental obligations and her employment. As for the absent husband, he received a custodial sentence of 32 months and a fine of €9,200.
