An operator of brothels in Belgium, Alderweireld acquired considerable media prominence because of his connections with Dominique Strauss-Kahn, former director-general of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), in the so-called "Carlton in Lille" affair.

In this affair, Dominique Alderweireld had been charged with aggravated procuring. In June 2015, he was acquitted by the French courts at the end of the Carlton trial. However, a Belgian court of appeal had convicted him in September 2014 to five years' imprisonment with suspension for procuring.
