Police dismantle drugs laboratory in Aalst and arrest extremely aggressive suspect
A production site for synthetic drugs on Irisstraat in Aalst was rolled up by police on Thursday. A man who was in the building displayed such aggressive behaviour that the Special Assistance Team had to intervene.
Police dismantle drugs laboratory in Aalst and arrest extremely aggressive suspect
On Thursday, police in Aalst dismantled a drugs laboratory on Irisstraat, not far from Park Terlinden. The building was used as a production site where mainly synthetic drugs were manufactured. Which exact substances were being made is still being investigated.
A man who was in the house had to be arrested before the laboratory could be safely dismantled. He was in a severely confused state, characterised by extreme aggression and abnormal excitement. This condition is known in medical literature as Exited Delirium Syndrome (EDS).
The Special Assistance Team (ORCO) intervened to arrest the suspect. Mayor Christoph D'Haese (N-VA) praised the officers' actions afterwards. He spoke of dangerous and particularly precarious police work.
After the arrest, the fire brigade and additional police units arrived on the scene. They checked whether any further dangers threatened public health.
Irisstraat is temporarily closed to all traffic. Police are continuing investigations there, seizing evidence and completing the dismantling of the laboratory.
