The Nivelles criminal court tried a 51-year-old businessman on 4 May for assault against his wife. The facts date back to 29 September 2025, shortly before noon, at their home in Lasne.
The altercation broke out when the man tried to interrupt a phone call his partner was making to a cleaner. He seized the device, she resisted the gesture. He then violently threw her to the ground. The fall resulted in six weeks of incapacity to work for the victim.
The defendant, a former operator of a Brussels establishment, admitted the facts before the court. He characterised his action as a "slip-up", explaining that he had pushed his wife to the limit. His lawyer highlighted the couple's difficult circumstances: they own several properties, including a restaurant in Lasne whose tenant has stopped paying rent, accumulating a rental debt of 50,000 euros.
The public prosecutor's representative did not accept this account. She requested a sentence of one year's imprisonment without suspension, emphasising that the complainant might conceal other acts of violence for fear of worsening marital tensions.
The judge decided differently. He decided to suspend the pronouncement of the sentence. The woman, who attended the hearing, clarified that she did not wish to obtain any compensation.
