A routine traffic check allowed law enforcement to seize a record amount of cash. Two individuals have been remanded in custody on suspicion of money laundering and criminal association.
Record seizure of €690,000 in Berchem-Sainte-Agathe: two suspects remanded in custody
A routine road operation allowed officers from the Brussels-West zone police to make a spectacular discovery in Berchem-Sainte-Agathe. The officers uncovered a sum of more than €690,000 in banknotes, the police service announced on Wednesday.
The incident occurred on 7 June at around 17:00. Officers noticed a driver making a U-turn without activating his direction indicators on Chaussée de Gand. During the check, the driver, aged 44 and already known to police, showed signs of anxiety.
The officers thoroughly searched the vehicle. This inspection revealed the presence of several mobile devices as well as a concealed compartment installed in the boot. The driver was handcuffed and taken to the police station, while the car and mobile phones were seized.
A search of the suspect's home led to the discovery of cash exceeding €690,000, as well as other communications devices. His partner, a woman in her forties, was also apprehended in connection with the case.
The Brussels prosecutor's office appointed an investigating magistrate. The two suspects were presented to this authority and formally charged with money laundering and membership of a criminal group. The man was additionally prosecuted for driving a vehicle equipped with a secret hiding place.
The two individuals were remanded in custody. The investigation is now continuing under the supervision of the investigating judge.
