A family tragedy unfolded on Saturday around 3pm on a street in Jemappes, near Mons. Around a dozen teenagers broke into a house to attack a minor resident. The reasons that drove this group to take action remain unclear at this stage.
The Mons-Tournai public prosecutor's office reports that the front door was unlocked when the young people arrived. Their faces were concealed by cloths and clothing. They were brandishing blunt weapons, particularly metal batons and truncheons.
The uncle of the boy targeted, a man in his fifties, attempted to repel the intruders by arming himself with a DIY tool. He was followed by his partner. The confrontation escalated within seconds. The fifty-year-old sustained several knife wounds to the abdomen and back. Doctors initially feared for his life, but his condition stabilised and he is no longer in a life-threatening state according to the latest news from the prosecutor's office. His partner also suffered blows to the buttocks and arm, and had to be stitched up in six places.
Three members of the group of assailants presented themselves at the emergency room with injuries. Six of them were apprehended by law enforcement. The youngest is to be presented on Monday to a juvenile judge. Investigators are seeking to understand what triggered this wave of violence.
