A man in his thirties named Kaël appeared before the courts again after being sentenced in absentia for domestic violence offences. The incident dates back to 26 August 2024 in Châtelet, in the province of Hainaut, according to reports.
On that day, a row broke out between Kaël and his partner. The man in his thirties acknowledges that he struck the young woman. However, he attempted to justify his actions: "She had gone away for two or three days without letting me know. Even I took some hits," he told the court.
On 24 October last, a first sentence had been handed down in absentia against him: six months' imprisonment. Kaël decided to file an opposition against this decision, which has resulted in him being retried.
At this new hearing, the defendant expressed hope of obtaining a suspended sentence. The prosecution did not oppose the granting of a measure of clemency, on one essential condition: that Kaël undergo treatment for his alcohol consumption problem.
The court will rule on 31 August next.
