A wakeboarder and the driver of his boat were targeted by gunfire on Friday on the Zuid-Willemsvaart at Dilsen. The suspected perpetrator has been identified.

On Friday at around 17:15, a member of the Waterskiclub de Lanklaar came under fire whilst waterskiing on the Zuid-Willemsvaart at Dilsen. The noise of the engine and the water spray prevented the 27-year-old from hearing the shots. It was a cyclist passing along the canal who alerted him.
The boat's skipper, also affiliated with the club, relates that he was towing his son behind the boat. "We are allowed to ski until 19:00 in July, as far as Rotem. We were passing the Dilsen bridge when we came near a pontoon where several fishing boats were moored."
"As we passed the pontoon, we heard loud bangs," the witness continues. "A cyclist was signalling to us. I then spotted a stranger on a blue fishing boat moored at the pontoon, putting a firearm into his vessel. At that point, we realised that shots had been fired in our direction. No one was injured, but it was a very unpleasant experience. I immediately informed the Maasland zone police."
The shooter's motives remain mysterious. The waterskiing club insists that its members scrupulously respect the authorised zones and times. "Fishermen or local residents do not always know this. Perhaps that is what triggered someone's anger," the association suggests.
Maasland police confirm that they received a call concerning this incident occurring near the water sports club. Given that the event took place on water, it was the water police service that attended the scene to conduct an investigation. The individual suspected of opening fire has since been identified. The inquiry continues.
