Twelve years imprisonment for attempted murder of wrong target in Saint-Nicolas
A 37-year-old man from Liège was sentenced on Friday by the district court to twelve years imprisonment for attempted murder. He fired on an innocent bystander after retrieving a weapon to take revenge on drug dealers.
Twelve years imprisonment for attempted murder of wrong target in Saint-Nicolas
A 37-year-old man has been sentenced by the Liège district court to twelve years imprisonment for attempted murder. The shooting incident took place on 9 September 2022 in Saint-Nicolas, in the province of Liège.
The offence occurred around 20:00 in front of a café. The perpetrator had had a dispute with members of an association active in drug trafficking. He reportedly had been forced to participate in this drug trade. On the day of the incident, he refused to sell cocaine, which led to accusations against him.
The man, a firearms enthusiast, returned home to retrieve a Beretta pistol. He then returned to the café to shoot. However, he mistook his target and fired at a man who was standing outside the establishment with his wife and daughter. The victim was struck by a bullet in the left side.
Thanks to swift surgery, the victim survived the incident. The shooter fled and only turned himself in to police more than three years after the offence.
The court sentenced the man, in a state of recidivism, to twelve years imprisonment. In addition, it imposed placement under the supervision of the sentence enforcement court for a period of five years.
