A tragedy that occurred last year in a Brussels park has triggered a wave of outrage across Belgian society. An eleven-year-old schoolboy riding an electric scooter lost his life after being struck by a vehicle belonging to law enforcement. This accident occurred while police officers were attempting to intercept the child who had not complied with their orders.
Belgian Interior Minister Bernard Quintin recently presented new rules concerning high-priority high-speed chases. These measures follow directly from the incident that occurred in early June of last year at Elisabeth Park in Brussels. Young Fabian, aged eleven, was riding an electric scooter when agents attempted to stop him. After the boy failed to comply, police officers pursued him by car, causing the fatal collision.
The event had then attracted numerous angry citizens to the scene of the tragedy protesting the conduct of law enforcement. Brussels prosecutor Julien Moinil quickly lamented that the accounts given by police and the findings of the investigation did not align.
However, the new regulations established by the Interior Ministry satisfy neither police officers nor road safety activists. Belgian society, already sensitised by other similar previous cases, is demanding stronger guarantees to prevent further tragedies.
