Capture of PCC member in Santa Cruz: Brazilian wanted for drug trafficking and arms smuggling

According to abi.bo, Bolivia's Government Minister, Marco Antonio Oviedo Huerta, confirmed on Wednesday the detention of Brazilian citizen Dellenberg de Sousa, 33 years old, identified as a senior member of the First Command of the Capital (PCC). The arrest took place on 3 November at 18:00 in the department of Santa Cruz.

The operation was carried out by Bolivian Police in coordination with the Federal Police of Brazil, as part of the secure borders plan. Oviedo stated that the capture is the result of "ongoing intelligence work and operations being conducted by Bolivian Police in the department of Santa Cruz".

De Sousa has active arrest warrants in Brazil and a sentence of 10 years, six months and 16 days issued by a court in the state of Mato Grosso, according to information from the Court of Justice of that region. The charges against him in his country include drug trafficking, arms trafficking and organised crime.

The general commander of Bolivian Police, first general Adrián Javier Álvarez Arizmendi, clarified that the detainee held a key role within the PCC's structure: he was responsible for coordinating the transport of controlled substances from Bolivia to Brazil. His operations were based in the state of Mato Grosso and the border area of San Ignacio de Velasco, as well as money laundering activities in the city of Santa Cruz.

Álvarez recalled that De Sousa has a record in Brazil for two cocaine seizures in July and August of 2003, when he was apprehended with shipments of 871 and 450 kilogrammes of that substance, respectively.

"This is the institutional response of the Government Ministry and Bolivian Police, through the processing of high-value intelligence information that allows us to identify, locate and capture these important members, in this particular case, of the First Command of the Capital," said the commander.

Álvarez warned that operations will continue to identify and capture members of criminal organisations active in Bolivian territory: "We will identify, locate and capture all of them. We will not permit any attempt to use national territory".
