A group of four people held in Palmasola prison has filed a petition for cessation of detention with the justice system in relation to proceedings concerning the discovery of 32 suitcases containing foreign currency at Viru Viru airport. Judge Ximena Flores, who is handling the case, scheduled the hearing for this Wednesday at 9:30.
Among those seeking release are a former legislator, a magistrate and two former judicial employees. All were imprisoned on 20 January under charges from the Public Prosecutor's office that include trafficking in controlled substances, conspiracy and organised crime.
The defence lawyers argue that their clients meet the legal requirements to face the charges whilst free. Judge Flores ordered that the proceedings be conducted in a combined manner: the detainees will participate by virtual means from within the prison, whilst the prosecutors and lawyers will attend in person at court.
The origin of this investigation dates back to November of the previous year, when a flight arrived in Santa Cruz from the United States carrying dozens of suitcases which, according to investigators, concealed foreign currency. This discovery triggered an investigation that led to the detention of the four now being prosecuted.
