Bolivia's attorney-general, Rodger Mariaka, has been arrested on suspicion of money laundering and drug trafficking, Interior Minister Marco Antonio Oviedo announced on Thursday.
Mariaka was arrested on Wednesday in Santa Cruz, two days after the United States cancelled his visa over alleged links to drug trafficking.
High-ranking Santa Cruz prosecutor Alberto Sebajos was also detained, having previously been sanctioned by Washington.
"A criminal organisation that had infiltrated the justice system was dismantled," Oviedo said. He added that the General Prosecutor's Office, "headed by Rodger Mariaka, became a criminal organisation whose objective was to protect, promote and maintain narcoterrorism".
Bolivian president Rodrigo Pass, who took office in November 2025, is seeking to strengthen ties with the United States. In March, Bolivia joined the "Shield of the Americas", an alliance of Latin American governments led by Washington to combat international organised crime, particularly drug trafficking.
