Bolivia's Attorney General arrested in drug and corruption case
Liepajniekiem.lv reports that Bolivia's Attorney General Rodger Mariaca was arrested on Wednesday in Santa Cruz on suspicion of money laundering and drug trafficking — two days after the United States revoked his visa due to possible links to drug trafficking.
Simultaneously arrested was Santa Cruz's top-level prosecutor Alberto Ceballos, against whom Washington had previously imposed sanctions.
Bolivia's President Rodrigo Paz announced that "a criminal organisation that had become entrenched in the judicial system has been dismantled". He added that the Attorney General's office under Mariaca's leadership "became a criminal organisation whose aim was to protect, promote and maintain narco-terrorism".
Paz, who has held office since November 2025, is seeking to strengthen cooperation with the United States. In March, Bolivia joined the United States-led alliance "Shield of the Americas", which brings together Latin American governments to combat international organised crime and drug trafficking.
