According to reporting by France 24, the authorities are charging Argollo with the crimes of "public incitement to crime" and "terrorism".
The protests, led by peasants, workers, miners and teachers, are demanding that the executive take measures to address the serious economic crisis gripping the South American nation, considered the worst in forty years. President Paz is facing these mobilisations just six months after taking office.
During the demonstrations, unrest was recorded involving protesters and police officers. The detention ordered by the prosecution marks an escalation in the judicial response to the social protests shaking the country.
