A 25-year-old woman presented herself voluntarily to the police in the locality of Chulumani, in the Yungas, and confessed to the death of her seven-month-old baby, according to eju.tv. The woman cooperated with investigators to identify the location where she had buried the child's body.
The information was provided by defence lawyer Mónica Irusta, who detailed that her client went to the police authority of her own accord after fleeing to Chulumani in search of help.
According to Irusta, the death occurred on 21 September at the home the woman rented in the Munaypata area of La Paz. According to the defence account, that night the woman arrived at her home after consuming alcoholic beverages, fed the baby, covered her with a blanket and settled her down to rest. Later she noticed that the child was no longer breathing.
Frightened by the situation, the woman placed the body beneath some stairs of the building where she lived, according to Irusta's account.
The defence lawyer emphasised that her client does not seek to deny the death or evade legal consequences, but stressed that the exact circumstances of the incident must be established during the judicial investigation.
The lawyer added that the accused also had another child of four years old in her care. The father of both minors, who allegedly acted subsequently as the complainant, did not contribute economically to the maintenance of the children, according to the defence version.
Irusta noted that the socioeconomic situation of the accused and the context surrounding the facts should be considered by the judicial authorities, although she clarified that those factors do not eliminate potential criminal liability. The woman also expressed concern for the four-year-old child who remains under her responsibility.
