Two vehicles intercepted on Amazonian highway with nearly one tonne of drugs

According to infobae.com, Bolivia's police confiscated 971.9 kilogrammes of cannabis in wet condition during an operation in the Beni region, northeast of the country, in an area bordering Brazil. The Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed the discovery and opened an investigation.

The drugs were being transported concealed in two vehicles circulating on the highway connecting the municipality of Guayaramerín—bordering Brazil—with the town of Cachuela Esperanza. The departmental prosecutor of Beni, Orlando Aramayo, detailed the facts in a statement from the Public Ministry.

"During the checks carried out on the highway, police officers intercepted a van that was transporting jute bags with a greenish substance with characteristics of cannabis," said Aramayo.

A second vehicle, a pick-up truck that attempted to evade the checkpoint, was stopped kilometres further ahead. Inside were found more packages with the same substance. Field tests applied to the contents of the bags tested positive for cannabis in both cases.

Along with the drugs and the vehicles, agents detained two men aged 27 and 33. Both are being investigated by the Public Prosecutor's Office for the alleged crime of trafficking in controlled substances and must appear before a provisional judge.

The operation was reported to the Public Ministry on Tuesday by the Intelligence and Special Operations Group (GIOE) of Guayaramerín, according to the prosecutor assigned to the case, Elmer Aguilar.
