Military firefighter shoots dead Medical student in Taubaté after traffic dispute

Firefighter with history of incidents accused of shooting Medical student dead in Taubaté

Marcos Paulo Fujarra de Oliveira, a 28-year-old military firefighter with about a decade in the corporation, fired shots at Bruno Hashimura San Juliano, 23, on Avenida Professor Walter Thaumaturgo—known as Avenida do Povo—in Taubaté, in the interior of São Paulo, on Wednesday (30). Bruno, a Medical student, was struck by four shots and did not survive. According to enquiries by g1.globo.com, the accused was arrested in flagrante delicto but obtained provisional freedom and remains under investigation for homicide.

The medical referral guide filled out at Vale do Paraíba Regional Hospital records four gunshot wounds: one to the neck, two to the thorax and one to the left arm. The Taurus 380 pistol used in the crime was registered in Marcos's name, with a registration certificate issued in 2023.

What the security cameras show

Images captured by cameras on the avenue show the two vehicles travelling side by side. In the recordings, Marcos appears gesticulating from the window of a Jeep Renegade. Subsequently, both vehicles stop side by side at a traffic light. A traffic sign prevents complete visualisation of the moment immediately before the shots were fired.

In a statement to police, Marcos claimed to have believed he was facing an attempted robbery and invoked self-defence, saying that Bruno was carrying an object that appeared to be a weapon. A witness, however, presented a different version: according to the account, Marcos allegedly got out of the car, approached Bruno's vehicle and smashed the window before firing the shots, without the student having reacted. Inside Bruno's car, police found only a pocket knife.

Previous incidents involving the accused

Before the fatal episode in Taubaté, Marcos had been involved in other incidents recorded by the authorities.

In 2021, the firefighter was involved in a traffic altercation on Avenida Mário Covas in São José dos Campos. According to the version he presented at the time, another driver had cut him off and, upon pulling over onto the shoulder, had exited the vehicle carrying a knife—at which point Marcos drew his weapon. The other driver, a property broker, presented a different version: he claimed to have been cut off by the firefighter and insulted during the argument. Marcos's defence maintains that the case was dismissed without a public prosecution indictment or criminal action.

In February 2024, a 29-year-old woman filed a police report against Marcos in São José dos Campos for domestic violence and threats. According to information obtained by TV Vanguarda, she told police she had been threatened repeatedly by the firefighter, who also allegedly attempted to convince her not to file the report. The episode allegedly took place in the 31 de Março neighbourhood area. The defence claims that this incident was likewise dismissed, without indictment or criminal action.

Career in the corporation and leave

Marcos was part of the metropolitan command of the Fire Department in São Paulo. According to the corporation, he never worked in units in Vale do Paraíba and the North Coast. Since May, he had been absent from duty after requesting leave to attend to personal matters—a modality that can last up to two years and does not provide for salary payment.

Judicial situation

Following arrest in flagrante delicto, the court granted the officer provisional freedom with precautionary measures, including suspension of the right to carry a weapon. The Public Prosecutor's office of São Paulo appealed the decision and requested preventive detention of Marcos. The appeal is still under analysis.

In a statement, lawyer Cláudio Rodrigues Moreira asserts that all previous incidents were dismissed and resulted in no indictment or criminal action. Regarding the 2021 episode, the defence maintains that the version currently being disclosed does not correspond to the account presented by the firefighter at the time and asserts that he did not even exit the vehicle. The defence also calls for caution in the disclosure of past events, arguing that dismissed proceedings should not be treated as convictions or criminal records.

The case is being investigated by the Civil Police of Taubaté.
