Third police officer arrested for planting drugs in Denarc operation in Belo Horizonte

Three civil police officers detained on suspicion of fabricating seizure in Belo Horizonte

Civil police officer Rodrigo Otávio Andrade turned himself in on Saturday afternoon (19) at the Casa de Custódia, in the Horto neighbourhood, in Belo Horizonte, and was arrested on the basis of a preventative detention warrant issued by the judiciary. According to g1.globo.com, he is the third officer detained in the case of an alleged fabricated arrest during a police operation in August.

The other two individuals involved were already in custody: Rafael Egg Macedo was detained on Monday (14), and Ana Luiza Guimarães Carvalho turned herself in on Friday (18). The three are suspected of having "planted" drugs during an approach carried out by the State Department for Combating Drug Trafficking (Denarc) on 7 August.

In that operation, a father and son were arrested on allegations of drug trafficking. The police officers claimed to have found a firearm and a block of cannabis at the property targeted by the search and seizure warrant. One of those detained, Matheus Bruno Andrade Fernandes, is the son of a civil police officer.

Days after the operation, images recorded by the police officers themselves during the action raised suspicions about how the drug would have been found. The General Inspectorate of the Civil Police opened an investigation to determine whether the drug was placed at the property to fabricate the arrest.

On Thursday (17), the judiciary revoked the preventative detention orders for the two individuals who were at the house. In the ruling, the judge raised doubts about the regularity of the seizure and considered that maintaining the detention was not necessary at that stage of the investigation.

The Civil Police of Minas Gerais (PCMG) confirmed the execution of the warrant in a statement, without detailing the case. "The PCMG informs that it executed, in the afternoon today (19), a preventative detention warrant against one of the suspects, an order issued by the Judicial Branch, within the scope of the investigation conducted by the General Inspectorate of Civil Police, which is proceeding under seal", the corporation stated.
