Accident in Schüpfen, lies to police – and a train conductor threatened
According to Google News CH — Crime (de), the Bernese state prosecutor's office has convicted an Italian resident of the Seeland region by penal order – for hit-and-run, misleading police and threatening a train conductor.
The incident occurred on a Saturday in April, coinciding with the defendant's 28th birthday. Although his driving licence had been revoked, he drove off the road in Schüpfen, disregarded a stop sign and skidded uncontrolled into the opposite lane, where he crashed into an embankment. An oncoming motorist was able to brake in time and prevent a collision.
Instead of contacting the police, the man drove the heavily damaged vehicle to a nearby car park. When questioned by the authorities, he denied any involvement in the accident. In the penal order, he is accused not only of "grossly unlawful conduct" but also of evading a breath alcohol test through his flight, which would allegedly have proven his unfitness to drive.
A few weeks before the accident, the defendant had already caused a disturbance on a BLS train from Biel to Bern. A companion had no ticket; the man wanted to purchase one retroactively via an app. When the train conductor explained that this was no longer possible after departure, the situation escalated: the defendant insulted the employee in German and Italian as an "arsehole" and threatened to make his life "hell".
The state prosecutor's office found him guilty of insulting and threatening a public official as well as multiple violations of road traffic legislation. The verdict includes a fine of 75 daily rates of 80 francs, a penalty of 500 francs and procedural costs of 500 francs. In total, the man has to pay 7,000 francs.
